Choosing Internal Audit Software: An Evaluation Checklist

Audit software demos all look similar for the first twenty minutes. These are the questions that separate the products once real work starts.

Does risk scoring actually drive the plan?

Many tools store a risk assessment and an audit plan as unrelated lists. Ask to see an approved plan line become an engagement, with its auditable area attached. If that step is manual re-keying, the link between risk and work will decay within a cycle.

How are workpapers tied to procedures?

Evidence stored in a folder tree is a shared drive with extra steps. Working papers should attach to the procedure, control, and risk they support, so a reviewer can move from a conclusion to the evidence behind it in one click.

What does the review workflow enforce?

Ask how a work item moves from prepared to reviewed to accepted, how review points are raised and cleared, and whether anything can be signed off with open review notes. This is where audit quality either is or is not built into the tool.

Does follow-up survive the report?

Recommendations should leave the report into a tracking register with owners, due dates, reminders, and evidence of implementation. Ask specifically how a recommendation is closed, and what evidence the system requires.

Can it handle your client structure?

Firms delivering outsourced internal audit need genuine multi-client separation — separate universes, plans, members, and reports per client — not one shared workspace with naming conventions.

What is the real cost, including rollout?

Compare licence cost against implementation, configuration of your methodology, training, and ongoing administration. A cheaper licence that needs a dedicated administrator is not cheaper.

How quickly can a new auditor become productive?

Legacy audit platforms often require days of training before an auditor can complete a workpaper. Ask to watch someone unfamiliar with the tool document a procedure end to end — that is the honest usability test.
